11-Year-Old Student Expelled After Disarming Classmate with Gun

A middle school student from Dwight Rich School of the Arts in Michigan was expelled after disarming a classmate who had brought a firearm to school, as reported by his mother. The seventh-grader, identified as Sakir, noticed his classmate carrying the weapon and took immediate action to safeguard his fellow students. A GoFundMe page established for Sakir and his family highlighted his instinctive reaction to protect his classmates, potentially preventing a disastrous incident.

Despite his heroic act, Sakir was charged with weapon possession and subsequently expelled from the school. His mother, Savitra McClurkin, expressed her indignation to local media, revealing that the school had expelled her son for the entire academic year. The incident took place in May, but Sakir did not immediately report it to his teachers due to fear of potential backlash. The exact timeline of when the disciplinary action was implemented remains uncertain.

McClurkin further explained that Sakir did not want to incriminate himself or the classmate who brought the gun to school, fully aware that firearms are prohibited on school grounds. Sakir’s ability to safely disarm the gun was credited to his experience with hunting.

Sakir, who is described as an “A/B student” and is actively involved in sports, is currently enrolled in a non-accredited online program to keep up with his academic progress while his educational future hangs in the balance. McClurkin criticized the school district’s decision, arguing that it was setting her son up for failure. She also expressed her dissatisfaction with online schools for supporting the district’s decision without offering alternative resources or options.

McClurkin, who has been campaigning for her son’s reinstatement, voiced her concerns at a recent school board meeting, but received no response. She questioned what she was supposed to do for her 11-year-old son, who had never been in trouble before.

The community has rallied behind McClurkin, with many expressing their shock at the decision. A GoFundMe page set up on behalf of McClurkin stated that Sakir, instead of being recognized as a hero, was being treated like a criminal. The abrupt expulsion has forced McClurkin to homeschool her son, causing her to reduce her work hours and creating financial stress on their household. The school district is expected to decide on Sakir’s reinstatement after the school year. It remains unknown if the student who brought the gun to school faced any consequences.
