DAVENPORT, Iowa — A 2-year-old girl died after being found unresponsive in an outdoor swimming pool at a home in rural Scott County, authorities said, prompting an investigation by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.
Emergency personnel were called at about 2:24 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, to a home on Maysville Road after receiving a report that the child was unresponsive. According to information released by the sheriff’s office, investigators believe the toddler fell into the pool and remained in the water for an undetermined amount of time before relatives found her.
The child’s family immediately began lifesaving measures and called 911, authorities said. First responders continued emergency efforts after arriving at the home. The girl was then taken by MedForce Air to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
The child was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities have not publicly released her name. The exact amount of time she was in the water also remained unknown in the preliminary investigation.
The sheriff’s office has not released additional details explaining how the child entered the pool or where family members were immediately before she was found. Authorities also have not announced any criminal allegations connected with the death. The investigation remained active in the latest public reports reviewed Saturday.
The incident occurred at a residence along Maysville Road in rural Scott County. Local reports initially said emergency crews responded to an unresponsive child Sunday afternoon and that she had been flown to an Iowa City hospital. Authorities later confirmed that the child had died and said the preliminary investigation determined she had fallen into the pool.
Information released by the sheriff’s office indicated that relatives went looking for the toddler and found her in the water before beginning emergency measures. Investigators have not publicly identified other people who were at the residence, and no further circumstances surrounding the incident have been released.
