23-Year-Old Woman in ICU After Man’s Suicide Attempt

A 20-year-old Lubbock man told police he intentionally rammed another car during a suicide attempt late on Nov. 29, injuring three people and leaving a 23-year-old woman in a trauma intensive care unit with life-altering wounds, according to family members and police statements.

The case has advanced to prosecutors for grand jury review after officers arrested Javier Valenzuela on three counts of aggravated assault. The wreck happened just before 10 p.m. at 34th Street and University Avenue, a busy intersection near central Lubbock. Family members say the most seriously hurt victim, Gracey Breitschopf, a recent West Texas A&M graduate who had just started a marketing job, suffered a traumatic brain injury and a severe spinal cord injury. Loved ones describe a long recovery with uncertain milestones, while investigators continue reconstructing the moments leading up to the crash and the driver’s reported statements to police.

Officers were called around 9:41 p.m. on Nov. 29 to reports of a multi-vehicle collision at the intersection. Police say the 20-year-old driver acknowledged he had been emotionally distraught, consumed multiple shots of alcohol and deliberately drove into cross traffic. A 25-year-old driver and a 61-year-old motorist suffered lesser injuries. Breitschopf, riding as a passenger, was gravely hurt and rushed to University Medical Center. Her grandfather, Steve Osborn, said the family learned that the driver had turned off his headlights and blew a red light before impact. “That’s been the hardest part to wrap our heads around, why a young man would do that on purpose,” Osborn said.

Relatives say Breitschopf was in a coma for eight days before opening her eyes, and she now communicates through hand signals while on a ventilator. Her cousin, Sydney Coleman, said the night started with a routine plan: a concert and a chance to catch up. “I hugged her on her way out and told her to have fun,” Coleman said. “You can be as careful as possible, but you don’t know what other people are going to do.” Doctors also treated broken ribs and torn neck ligaments, according to the family, who added that early therapy decisions depend on the pace of neurological stabilization. The hospital has not released formal updates, citing patient privacy.

Police records indicate Valenzuela was arrested after admitting his intent during interviews with investigators. He faces three aggravated assault counts tied to each injured person in the collision. Under Texas law, prosecutors typically present such cases to a grand jury, which decides whether to return indictments. The district attorney’s office has not publicly discussed a timeline. Officers collected crash data, vehicle modules and witness statements and are expected to add hospital documentation to the case file. Formal toxicology reports have not been released. No other suspects are being sought.

The wreck unfolded at a crossroads lined with restaurants and small businesses where weekend traffic can be heavy. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with airbags deployed and debris scattering across multiple lanes. Nearby patrons stepped outside after the impact, some using phones to call 911 while others directed cars away from the intersection until police arrived. Investigators shut down portions of 34th Street and University Avenue for several hours to map skid marks, download crash data and photograph damage patterns, steps that will inform speed calculations and signal timing analysis.

Breitschopf’s relatives have framed the coming months as a mix of prayer, rehab and paperwork. Osborn said strangers began following her recovery posts online and checking in after the story reached local newscasts. Coleman said donations poured in within a day of the crash, noting that the outpouring made it easier for the family to focus on hospital decisions. “We’ve already seen so many miracles,” she said. “But these are very long-term, long road of recovery type of injuries.” Friends from college have sent notes and videos, and former coworkers have coordinated meal trains for the family rotating at the hospital.

Police summarized the initial sequence as a deliberate act: an emotionally distressed driver who consumed alcohol, then entered the intersection in a way that offered oncoming motorists little chance to avoid a collision. The department has not announced any additional traffic-related citations beyond the felony assault counts, which can incorporate alleged reckless or intentional conduct that causes serious bodily injury. A municipal traffic reconstruction specialist and a detective assigned to the case have been meeting with prosecutors to determine what additional records might be needed for presentation.

Public safety officials and hospital staff often note that intentional crashes can be unusually destructive, especially when lights are disabled or speed is high. In this investigation, officers documented damage patterns consistent with a high-energy impact at a right angle. The roadway reopened after midnight as tow trucks cleared vehicles and crews swept glass from the asphalt. Businesses at the intersection resumed normal hours the next morning, and small bouquets appeared near a light pole by the curb, placed by friends who stopped between visits to the ICU.

Breitschopf’s family has emphasized who she is outside of the crash report. She graduated from West Texas A&M earlier this year and had moved to Lubbock for her first post-college job. Photos family members shared with reporters show a young woman celebrating commencement and tailgating with friends. “We want people to see beyond a name in a story,” Coleman said. “To see the Gracie we know and love.” Osborn added that the family’s focus remains on her progress. “We don’t know what the future holds, but we know she has support,” he said.

Legal steps ahead include possible indictment decisions, arraignment and bond conditions if the case proceeds, followed by discovery and pretrial hearings. In similar felony assault cases stemming from crashes, courts often schedule a series of dates over several months while parties exchange evidence, take statements and await lab results. If indictments are returned, a trial date would be set later, with opportunities for plea negotiations depending on the facts and injury documentation. The district attorney’s office typically announces charging updates after a grand jury action is filed.

Neighbors in central Lubbock say the intersection is busy on weekend nights, with steady pedestrian and vehicle activity. On the Sunday after the crash, crews repainted a scuffed curb and replaced a broken signpost. A clerk at a nearby shop recalled watching emergency lights reflect across storefront windows and said customers lingered longer than usual, trading updates as ambulances pulled away. By midweek, relatives said, Breitschopf remained in the ICU while doctors adjusted sedation and evaluated breathing support. Friends rotated visits and left cards and a small stuffed bear at the nurse’s station.

As of Saturday, family members say Breitschopf is stable in the trauma ICU, communicating with hand signals and beginning to respond to simple prompts. Police say their case file is moving through routine steps toward grand jury consideration. The next public milestone is a potential indictment decision, which would trigger a court schedule and formal docket entries.
