In a shocking incident, three children were rescued from a home in Oviedo, Spain, where they had been confined for years under strict COVID-19 lockdown conditions, long after the pandemic restrictions had been lifted. The children, twin eight-year-olds and a ten-year-old, were reportedly forced to wear face masks continuously and had been kept indoors since 2021.
Upon their rescue, the children were observed to breathe deeply, as if experiencing the outside world for the first time. The children, of German nationality, were seen stepping out of the house wearing face masks. The sight of the outside world seemed to astonish them, with the children reaching out to touch the grass in apparent wonder.
The parents of the children, a 48-year-old German-American woman and her 53-year-old German husband, were taken into custody. They face charges of domestic violence and child abandonment. Investigators believe the parents were suffering from a condition they referred to as “COVID syndrome,” which led them to impose severe lockdown conditions on their family for several years.
Neighbors who noticed that the children were not attending school alerted the authorities to the situation. Upon investigation, the children were found to be in a deplorable state. While they were not malnourished, they were unkempt and appeared to be completely disconnected from reality, having been kept away from school and the outside world for an extended period.
The children’s reaction to the outside world was telling of their prolonged confinement. When they were taken to the garden, they were reportedly fascinated by a snail, reacting with extreme excitement.
