3-Year-Old Girl Killed During Family Meal at Restaurant

Two Euclid residents face charges after the Father’s Day crash at City Barbeque.

BEACHWOOD, Ohio — A 3-year-old girl died after a car left a shopping center parking lot and struck her while she was eating with family outside a City Barbeque restaurant on Father’s Day, police said.

The crash has led to criminal charges against 18-year-old Jasmine McFadden, of Euclid, and 61-year-old Kenneth McFadden, also of Euclid. Police said Jasmine McFadden was driving without a license when the vehicle crossed a curb and entered the outdoor dining area. Kenneth McFadden, who was in the front passenger seat, is accused of first telling officers he was the driver.

The crash happened about 1:30 p.m. June 21 at City Barbeque in the Pavilion Shopping Center, a retail area in Beachwood, east of Cleveland. Investigators said the vehicle was moving through the parking lot when it left the roadway, crossed a curb and went into the patio area. One 911 caller told dispatchers the car was in reverse. Another caller said, “A car just reversed into us at a restaurant, and my daughter has been hit by the car.”

The child, identified in some court records and reports as Margot Miller-Wilkins, was taken to Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital, where she died from her injuries. Beachwood police have said the investigation remains open and that officers are reviewing all factors that may have led to the crash. Police have not said how fast the vehicle was moving. Records reviewed by local news outlets said Jasmine McFadden did not have a valid driver’s license at the time.

Jasmine McFadden was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. She appeared June 22 in Shaker Heights Municipal Court, where bond was set at $100,000. Her case was bound over to Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. Kenneth McFadden was charged with obstructing official business and wrongful entrustment. Police said he was seated in the front passenger seat but initially claimed he had been driving. He is scheduled for arraignment July 13 in Shaker Heights Municipal Court.

City Barbeque said its Beachwood restaurant remained closed after the crash and had no reopening date. The company said it was “heartbroken” and was cooperating with local authorities. Kenneth McFadden is known in northeast Ohio as Ken “Mouse” McFadden, a former Cleveland State basketball standout who helped lead the Vikings to the Sweet 16 in 1986. Police have not said whether his relationship to Jasmine McFadden is part of the case.

Beachwood police said the crash affected the child’s family, witnesses, first responders and restaurant workers. The department said it extended condolences to the girl’s loved ones and asked that the family’s privacy be respected. The next scheduled court step is Kenneth McFadden’s July 13 arraignment, while Jasmine McFadden’s case moves to county court.
