An Ohio man, aged 25, has been sentenced to over a decade in prison for his involvement in the death of his four-month-old son, who succumbed to prolonged abuse. Landan Jennings was handed the maximum sentence of 16 and a half years by Clark County Common Pleas Judge Douglas M. Rastatter, following the tragic death of his infant son in 2023, as per court records.
Jennings had previously struck a deal with the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office in February, where he pleaded guilty to a single count of permitting child abuse. In return, the remaining charges against him, including two counts of murder, one count of felonious assault, and one count of endangering children, were dismissed.
The mother of the victim, Angel Seiker, was also implicated in the death of her son. She pleaded guilty to the same charge as Jennings and is awaiting sentencing. Before delivering the sentence, Judge Rastatter addressed Jennings directly, explaining his decision to impose the maximum sentence.
The judge expressed his belief that the child had only experienced pain and suffering in his short life, and he could not show mercy or leniency to Jennings when his son had not been shown any. He emphasized that the child had been subjected to continuous abuse in the months leading up to his death.
The indictment alleges that Jennings engaged in a “continuous course of conduct” from August 25 to December 29, 2023, which involved knowingly inflicting “serious physical harm” on his son, leading to the infant’s death. The autopsy report from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office revealed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, ruling it a homicide.
Earlier this year, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office reported that the infant showed additional signs of abuse. The office stated that the child had suffered severe blunt force trauma to the head and exhibited other injuries in various stages of healing, suggesting a history of abuse.
In a letter to the judge in late January, Jennings requested probation of up to 25 years, insisting that he did not harm his son. He referred to his son as a “miracle baby” and expressed his inability to comprehend causing him harm. He revealed that he named his son after his own brother, who had drowned several years prior.
