An Alabama woman is facing charges of attempted murder and child abuse after allegedly trying to suffocate her four-month-old daughter. Mireira Lucero, 28, was arrested by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and is currently being held at the Lee County Detention Center with a bond set at $85,000.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday in a residence on Lee Road in Phenix City, Alabama. Witnesses at the scene reported to deputies that Lucero was attempting to suffocate her infant daughter, who wouldn’t stop crying. They also claimed that Lucero committed other violent acts against the child.
According to the authorities, witnesses reported seeing Lucero choking and shaking the baby in an attempt to quiet her. A 911 call was made around 12:38 a.m., alerting authorities to the situation and claiming that Lucero was trying to smother her daughter.
Court documents obtained from local sources reveal further disturbing details. Lucero allegedly held her baby up high and shook her, placed blankets and pillows over the baby, and grabbed the child by the throat.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene and transported the infant to a nearby hospital. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported that the baby was alert and appeared to be in good health at the time of transport. Law enforcement officers also responded to the scene, arresting Lucero and taking her into custody.
Phenix City, where the incident took place, is located in eastern Alabama, less than a mile from the Georgia border. The case continues to unfold as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse.
