6-Year-Old Dies After Tragic Balloon Incident

A tragic incident unfolded in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, when a six-year-old boy lost his life after inhaling helium from a Mylar balloon, as reported by family members and authorities. The unfortunate event took place in the boy’s residence on May 29. The Wabash County Coroner’s Office, which was called to the distressing scene, indicated that initial findings point to suffocation from the helium-filled balloon as the cause of death.

Coroner Shaun Keepes issued a public alert about the potential hazards of these large balloons, often seen as harmless party decorations. He underscored the serious risks they present, particularly to young children, including the rare but severe potential for suffocation and helium toxicity.

Further examinations and toxicology reports are underway to establish the official cause of death. Local law enforcement is also carrying out an investigation into the heartbreaking incident.

The young victim, Gunner Hyatt, had just finished Kindergarten at Mount Carmel Elementary School. His obituary painted a picture of a joyful and adventurous child whose laughter could brighten any room. Gunner loved the outdoors, whether it was playing baseball, fishing, or exploring the woods. He also had a fondness for monster trucks and enjoyed mud riding with his family.

Gunner, the youngest of three siblings, celebrated his birthday on May 21. His aunt, Bethany Hyatt, shared her sorrow on social media, describing Gunner as a joy to be around and an incredible child. She wrote about the profound emptiness his absence has left in their lives and how he touched many lives during his brief time on earth.

Gunner’s funeral is set for Friday afternoon at the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home. This tragic incident mirrors a similar case in 2023 when a young girl from Tennessee lost her life due to her birthday balloons just days after her seventh birthday. The girl’s mother has since been warning other parents about the potential dangers of foil helium balloons.
