8-Year-Old boy Spent 2 Days Living With Murdered Mom, Brother in Home After her Boyfriend Fatally Shot Them

A Georgia resident, William Jerome Adams, 29, has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the brutal murder of his girlfriend and her teenage son. The victims, Mary Lindsay, 39, and her 15-year-old son, Atif Muhammad, Jr., were found dead in their Flowery Branch home in March 2021. The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the verdict in a statement released on Friday.

The case came to light on March 26, 2021, when Lindsay’s eldest daughter, concerned about her mother’s uncharacteristic silence, decided to check on her. She entered the house through a window and found her 8-year-old brother sleeping in their mother’s room, oblivious to the tragedy that had unfolded. The bodies of Lindsay and Atif were discovered in the locked bedroom.

Further inquiries revealed that Adams had shot Lindsay and Atif in the bedroom two days earlier. The 8-year-old boy had been alone in the house for two days, unaware of the horrific crime that had taken place. The police discovered three 9 mm shell casings in the room, which were matched to ammunition found nearby.

Adams was apprehended by federal authorities in Laredo, Texas, while attempting to cross the border into Mexico under a false identity and without a passport. Investigators also discovered that Adams had stolen $2,000 from Lindsay’s bank account.

During the trial, Atif’s twin sister testified that she had found a 9 mm Luger handgun in the house about ten days before the murders and had taken a photograph of it. Lindsay had confirmed that the gun belonged to Adams. The jury was also presented with evidence of Adams’ abusive behavior towards Lindsay, including a photograph of an injury he had inflicted on her arm.

Following the verdict, District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson stated, “The verdict and sentence are fitting for a defendant who violently took the life of a mother and son and stole from them.” She expressed her condolences to the victims’ family and hoped that the trial’s outcome would bring them some closure and justice.
