Amazon Driver Shot Twice During Predawn Delivery

Police arrested a suspect after 23-year-old Yirmar Martinez was wounded while attempting to deliver a package before dawn in Cedar Hill.

CEDAR HILL, Texas — An Amazon Flex driver is recovering after she was shot twice while making an early-morning package delivery at a Cedar Hill property, an attack that ended with police arresting a suspect whose identity and possible charges had not been publicly announced as of Friday.

Yirmar Martinez, 23, said she was delivering packages shortly before 5 a.m. Oct. 12 when she reached a property along North Cedar Hill Road, south of Dallas. Martinez told local news outlets that the area was dark and she had difficulty locating the correct entrance and front door. Cedar Hill police confirmed that an arrest was made in connection with the shooting, but authorities had not released a suspected motive.

Martinez said she turned on her vehicle’s high beams so she could better see the property and moved along an access area near the home. She then noticed a man carrying a gun, according to her account. Martinez said she tried to make clear why she was there by displaying her Amazon vest and the package she was attempting to deliver.

The man said something to her in English that she did not understand before opening fire, Martinez told FOX 4 and Univision. She said one bullet grazed the top of her head and another struck her lower back. Martinez was able to remain behind the wheel and tried to leave the property while more shots were fired in her direction, according to her account.

Martinez said she struck a mailbox as she escaped but continued driving. She eventually encountered a motorcyclist stopped at a traffic light, and that person helped summon emergency assistance, according to Univision. Martinez survived the shooting and later returned home as she continued recovering from her injuries.

Her husband, Leonel Campos, was connected to Martinez through a video call during part of the incident, according to Univision. Campos, who was also working as a delivery driver that morning, said he repeatedly urged his wife to keep driving as she tried to get away. Martinez told the station she feared she might lose consciousness before she could reach medical help.

Martinez told Univision she had worked as an Amazon Flex driver for about six months. The program allows independent delivery partners to select delivery blocks and use their personal vehicles to transport packages. Martinez said she favored early-morning work because the schedule allowed her to spend more time with her 5-year-old son. She told FOX 4 she moved from Venezuela to Texas about two years ago.

Cedar Hill police confirmed to FOX 4 that a person had been arrested in connection with the shooting. Police had not publicly identified that person because charges had not been announced. Martinez spoke with investigators Thursday, and she said police continued to hold her vehicle as evidence while the investigation proceeded.

Amazon said it had contacted Martinez following the shooting and was reviewing what happened. The company told FOX 4 that the safety of delivery partners is a priority and said it would cooperate with law enforcement during the investigation. Authorities have not publicly explained what they believe caused the confrontation or whether the person who opened fire knew Martinez was making a delivery.

The shooting remained under investigation Friday. Cedar Hill police had not released the arrested person’s name, announced formal charges or disclosed a suspected motive, leaving key questions about the circumstances surrounding the predawn attack unresolved.
