Investigators allege videos discovered on a returned cellphone led to charges against the 25-year-old Little Egg Harbor woman.
TOMS RIVER, N.J. — A judge ordered a New Jersey babysitter held in custody while she faces charges alleging she sexually assaulted a young child and recorded the encounter on a cellphone, according to court records and reports from a detention hearing.
Victoria Anne Cranmer, 25, of Little Egg Harbor, is charged with second-degree sexual assault, second-degree manufacturing of child sexual abuse material, third-degree possession of child sexual abuse material and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child. The charges are accusations, and Cranmer has not been convicted.
The case began after a woman who had lived with Cranmer found a 14-second video stored in the Snapchat Memories section of an iPhone, according to an affidavit of probable cause cited by several news organizations. The woman, identified in court records only as Ms. P., had given Cranmer the phone as a birthday present and asked for it back after the two had a falling out in May.
Ms. P. told investigators that she examined the returned phone and found footage that appeared to show Cranmer acting inappropriately with a child in a bathroom. She saved the video and contacted authorities. The child’s name has not been made public. Charging information described the alleged victim as younger than 13, while reports citing details from the investigation described the child as a toddler.
Detectives with the Little Egg Harbor Police Department took possession of the phone and obtained a search warrant on May 28, according to the affidavit. Investigators also sought access to Cranmer’s Snapchat account. Authorities allege that the searches uncovered other videos involving Cranmer and the same child in the bathroom.
The former roommate identified Cranmer in the footage by her voice, several distinctive tattoos and the setting where the video was recorded, according to the court filing. Investigators allege that at least one recording had been posted through Snapchat. The company has not been accused of wrongdoing in the case.
Cranmer had cared for children while living at the Little Egg Harbor home, the affidavit alleges. Investigators also interviewed another mother whose child had spent time in Cranmer’s care. Reports citing the filing said the mother described changes in her child’s behavior, but authorities have not announced additional charges involving that child.
Cranmer was arrested July 8 and taken to the Ocean County Jail. At a detention hearing Tuesday, July 14, her defense attorney argued that the short recording had been misinterpreted and said the encounter was an innocent moment that had been “blown out of proportion,” according to reports from the hearing. The defense maintained that Cranmer did not direct the child’s conduct.
Prosecutors opposed Cranmer’s release and argued that the recording showed troubling conduct involving a child in her care. Superior Court Judge Kenneth Palmer ordered Cranmer detained while the case proceeds, describing the footage as troubling and rejecting the defense request for her release.
The investigation remains active. Authorities have not publicly announced additional defendants or identified the child. Cranmer remained in the Ocean County Jail following the detention ruling, and a future court date had not been publicly confirmed as of Thursday.
