Police and county inspectors are reviewing the death at a Cherry Hill Road complex where other children have fallen.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — A young girl died Thursday night after falling from a high-rise apartment building in Prince George’s County, prompting police and county inspectors to review a College Park complex where two other children have fallen within the past year.
The fall was reported around 9 p.m. in the 9300 block of Cherry Hill Road, at the Seven Springs apartments. Police said the child was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. Authorities had not released her name, official age or the cause of the fall as of Saturday. No charges were pending, and investigators said they were still trying to determine what happened inside the apartment before the child fell.
Local reports differed on the child’s age. NBC Washington reported that the girl was 2, while Fox 5 reported that a relative said she was 4 and fell from a 10th-floor bedroom window. WTOP reported Saturday that police had not confirmed the child’s age. Neighbors told local reporters that a window screen was found on the ground near the child after the fall. Police have not said whether the window was open, whether the screen had been attached, whether any adults were inside the unit or whether detectives found signs of a crime or neglect.
The death brought new attention to Seven Springs, a group of older high-rise apartment buildings near Cherry Hill Road and the Capital Beltway. The Prince George’s County Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement opened a review of Thursday’s fall and two earlier child falls at the same complex. County officials told Fox 5 the apartments were built in the late 1960s, when building codes differed from current rules. The agency had not announced any violation tied to the child’s death as of Saturday.
Thursday’s death was the third reported fall involving a young child at the complex in less than a year. In August 2025, a 3-year-old boy fell from a sixth-story balcony in College Park and was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy said then, “No family should ever have to experience such pain and fear.” In November 2025, a 2-year-old fell from a sixth-floor window at Seven Springs and survived, according to local reports. Officials have not said whether the three falls shared any common cause or involved similar windows or balconies.
Police said first responders were called after a report that a child had fallen from an apartment building. The girl initially survived the fall and was rushed for treatment, but she later died at the hospital. Investigators were expected to review witness statements, emergency response records and the unit from which the child fell. County inspectors were expected to examine whether windows, screens, balcony features or other building conditions met applicable rules. Authorities had not publicly identified the child’s parents or other relatives by Saturday.
The case remained open as residents waited for more information from police and inspectors. Local reporters described a painful scene outside the tower after emergency crews arrived Thursday night, with neighbors gathering near the building while first responders treated the child. Police did not release a final ruling on the manner of death. No public timetable was announced for the inspection review, and officials had not said whether repair orders, enforcement action or additional safety findings would follow.
As of Saturday, the child’s identity, official age and exact cause of the fall had not been released. The next public update is expected from Prince George’s County police or county inspectors as the investigation continues.
