A woman was killed and four other people were injured after a gunman breached the Tampa-area corporate campus, authorities said.
BRANDON, Fla. — A gunman drove through a secured fence at a Citibank corporate campus Wednesday, killed a woman outside and continued into a cafeteria before an armed security guard shot him, authorities said. Four other people were hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The Nov. 4 attack prompted a massive law enforcement response at the sprawling Hillsborough County campus, where about 3,200 employees were working at the time. Authorities said the suspect was taken to Tampa General Hospital and later died. Investigators had not released the names of the gunman or the woman who was killed as of early Thursday, and a motive had not been established.
Hillsborough County officials said the first emergency calls reporting gunfire came at about 12:11 p.m. A marked law enforcement unit arrived about a minute later. Investigators said the gunman had driven over medians and through a security fence before crashing into or near an outdoor area where workers were eating lunch. He then got out carrying a rifle and shot a woman, who died at the scene.
The gunman then entered the campus cafeteria, where an armed security guard confronted him, authorities said. The guard shot the suspect at about 12:15 p.m., roughly four minutes after the first 911 calls. The suspect was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officials credited the guard with stopping the attack before more people could be harmed.
Four additional people were taken to hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities had not clarified whether those injuries were caused by gunfire, the vehicle or other circumstances during the emergency. Investigators also had not publicly said whether the woman who died knew the gunman or why she was targeted.
More than 360 Hillsborough County sheriff’s personnel responded as deputies searched the large business complex room by room. Officials said the process of clearing and securing the campus took about two and a half hours. Employees were evacuated from buildings or sheltered in other locations while tactical teams checked the property for any additional threat.
Hundreds of workers streamed away from the campus during the response, and a nearby hotel was used to shelter or reunite employees. Authorities also established a reunification point as relatives sought information about people working inside the complex. Law enforcement officials said there was no continuing threat after the gunman was stopped.
Citi said it was aware of the incident affecting its Tampa-area site and was coordinating with law enforcement. The company did not immediately release additional information about the victim, the security guard or the circumstances surrounding the attack. The campus is a major Citi workplace in the Tampa Bay region and contained thousands of employees when the shooting began.
Investigators continued gathering video, witness accounts and other evidence Wednesday night and into Thursday. Authorities had not announced a motive, identified the people who died or explained any relationship between them. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remained active as detectives worked to determine what led to the attack.
