An Australian pair, Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin, recently recounted their unsettling experience of sharing their row with a deceased passenger during a long-haul flight. The incident occurred on a 15-hour Qatar Airways flight from Melbourne, Australia, to Doha, Qatar. The identity of the deceased woman, who suffered a medical emergency mid-flight, has not been revealed.
Ring detailed the unfortunate event, explaining that despite the flight crew’s best efforts, the woman’s life could not be saved. The crew attempted to move her to the business class section, but due to her size, they were unable to maneuver her through the aisle.
Ring and Colin, who had two empty seats in their row, were then asked by the visibly distressed flight crew to move over so they could place the deceased woman’s body next to them. Ring complied without objection, and the woman’s body was placed in the seat he had just vacated.
A photograph taken during the flight shows Ring watching his in-flight entertainment while the woman’s body, covered with a blanket, sat next to him. Ring estimates that he spent approximately four hours in close proximity to the deceased passenger.
Upon landing, the couple, who were on their way to Italy, were instructed by the airline crew to remain seated while first responders arrived to retrieve the woman’s body. Ring expressed his disbelief and discomfort at the situation, stating, “I can’t believe they told us to stay … it wasn’t nice.”
In response to the incident, Qatar Airways expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased passenger and apologized for any distress caused. They also stated that they were in the process of reaching out to the couple to address their concerns in accordance with their policies and procedures.
