Authorities say a domestic violence incident escalated into a fatal barricade situation that left one woman dead and a police officer wounded.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A man forced his way into a north San Antonio home Friday, fatally shot his estranged wife, wounded a responding police officer and later died by suicide after a standoff that lasted several hours, authorities said.
The violence unfolded in the Stone Oak area and prompted a large response from police, SWAT officers, negotiators and emergency medical crews. Two children who were inside the residence escaped physical injury and were safely removed during the incident. Investigators identified the dead adults over the weekend and said the case remains under review as detectives examine evidence, prior domestic violence allegations and the sequence of events that led to the shooting.
Police said officers were dispatched around midday Friday to a home on Red Hawk Ridge near Hardy Oak Boulevard after receiving reports of a disturbance involving a firearm. According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, the suspect, Albert Nixon Richter IV, arrived at the residence armed with a handgun and entered through a glass door. Once inside, police said, he fatally shot Brianna Nicole Richter, described by authorities as his estranged or soon-to-be estranged wife. The suspect then barricaded himself in a room as officers responded to the scene. “He gets inside, kills his estranged or soon-to-be estranged wife, and barricades himself in one of the rooms,” McManus said during a briefing. The shooting quickly transformed a domestic violence response into a major tactical operation as officers worked to secure the neighborhood and assess the threat inside the home.
Authorities said the suspect fired at least one shot at responding officers after police arrived. One round struck a San Antonio police officer below his protective vest and above his belt. The officer, a seven-year veteran of the department, was transported to a hospital and underwent surgery. McManus later said no vital organs were struck and the injuries were not considered life-threatening. Police did not immediately release the officer’s identity. During the standoff, officers used loudspeakers in an effort to communicate with the suspect and later deployed tear gas. At approximately 3 p.m., officers entered the residence and found both Albert Richter and Brianna Richter dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators recovered a pistol inside the home. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled Albert Richter’s death a suicide and Brianna Richter’s death a homicide. Officials have not publicly detailed whether anyone else was threatened before police arrived.
The incident occurred in a residential section of north San Antonio near Hardy Oak Elementary School and Lopez Middle School. Police said the suspect did not appear to reside at the home. Two children were inside during the confrontation. Initial accounts placed their ages around 10 and 12, while later reports indicated they were between 8 and 12 years old. Authorities said both children were removed safely and suffered no physical injuries. Neighbor Randall Ashmore described seeing officers escort the children away from the residence amid the tense scene. Ashmore said one officer appeared to shield the children while moving them to safety. The case has also renewed attention on the dangers associated with domestic violence incidents, particularly when firearms and separation disputes are involved. Family Violence Prevention Services President and CEO Marta Parda Pelaez said domestic violence often involves escalating patterns of power and control and can become especially dangerous when relationships are ending.
Investigators are also reviewing reports of earlier domestic violence allegations involving the couple. Records cited in local reporting indicated Albert Richter had previously been accused of choking, striking and pointing a firearm at Brianna Richter during an incident in April. Authorities initially said they had not located a history of domestic violence calls involving the suspect within Bexar County records, though subsequent reporting referenced arrest warrants and affidavits connected to earlier assault allegations. Officials have not fully explained the status of those prior cases. Because Albert Richter died at the scene, prosecutors are not expected to pursue criminal charges related to Brianna Richter’s death. Detectives are continuing to examine physical evidence recovered from the residence, interview witnesses and review officer reports generated during the response. Police also said they were looking into whether the suspect had any gang affiliations, though no findings had been announced.
Residents in the Stone Oak neighborhood watched a large police presence develop throughout the afternoon as tactical teams established a perimeter around the home. Some nearby residents were evacuated while officers attempted to resolve the situation. Emergency vehicles, patrol units and specialized law enforcement teams filled surrounding streets for hours. The shooting marked the second time in the same week that a San Antonio police officer had been shot while responding to a call. Community members expressed concern for the wounded officer and for the children who witnessed the violence. Officials have not disclosed where the children were taken afterward or what long-term arrangements may be made for their care. Authorities said only that the children were physically unharmed. Investigators remained at the residence after the standoff ended, collecting evidence and documenting the scene as part of the ongoing inquiry.
As of June 22, authorities had identified both adults involved, confirmed the officer was recovering and said the investigation remained active. Detectives are expected to continue reviewing evidence, prior records and reports from officers who responded to the scene while the medical examiner completes remaining case documentation.
