Couple Found Dead in Bathtub While Celebrating 4-Year-Old’s Birthday

In a tragic incident in Brazil, a police officer and his wife, a businesswoman, succumbed to heatstroke after spending time in an excessively heated bathtub. The couple, who had been under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, were celebrating their daughter’s fourth birthday.

The deceased, identified as 37-year-old military officer Jeferson Luiz Sagaz and his wife, 41-year-old nail salon owner Ana Carolina Silva, were discovered in a motel in Santa Catarina on the night of August 11. The couple had spent the day in celebration, consuming alcohol and cocaine, before visiting a nightclub and checking into the Dallas Motel around midnight.

Concerns were raised when the couple failed to pick up their daughter the following day, leading relatives to report them missing. Their bodies were later found in the motel’s bathtub.

Authorities determined that the cause of death was heatstroke, exacerbated by the presence of alcohol and cocaine in their systems, which likely impaired their ability to respond to the extreme heat. The bathtub water was found to have reached a temperature of 122 degrees Fahrenheit, and a space heater in the room was also set to a high temperature.

Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza stated that the cause of death was exogenous poisoning, which led to intense dehydration, thermal collapse, organ failure, and ultimately, death. Toxicology tests confirmed the presence of cocaine and high levels of alcohol in their blood.

Dr. Fernando Oliva da Fonseca, Director of Forensic Medicine for the Scientific Police, explained that the combination of cocaine and alcohol could induce a state of physical dormancy, or torpor, in which the body’s metabolic rate slows significantly. This state, combined with the extreme heat, likely prevented the couple from reacting to their dangerous situation.

Further investigations ruled out other potential causes of death such as carbon monoxide poisoning, drowning, or electric shock. The police also confirmed that no third party was involved in the incident.

The couple had been together for nearly 20 years and had no history of violence in their relationship. Following the incident, Carolina’s family issued a statement denying her drug use and suggesting she was coerced into consuming the substances.
