A peaceful neighborhood in Simi Valley is grappling with the shocking murder of a cherished local couple. Dr. Eric Cordes, 63, a respected radiologist, and his wife Vicki Schiller, 66, a popular spin instructor and recent grandmother, were found fatally shot in their garage in broad daylight. The couple, known for their vibrant personalities and contributions to their community, were discovered in their $1.3 million residence around midday on a Sunday.
Despite immediate medical attention, both Cordes and Schiller succumbed to their injuries. The incident has left the community in a state of disbelief, prompting questions about who could have wanted to harm the well-regarded couple.
Adding a layer of mystery to the case, investigators discovered a burned car with a charred body inside, approximately 70 miles away from the crime scene. The vehicle, a black Honda Civic, has been connected to the double murder, according to Simi Valley Police Sergeant Rick Morton. The identity of the body found in the car remains unknown, but a firearm was recovered from the scene.
Witnesses reported seeing a man, believed to be the couple’s stepson, at the residence shortly before the shooting. However, police have yet to confirm this information. “We do believe the victims were targeted,” Morton stated in a press conference. “We don’t believe they were random victims.”
The news of the double homicide has sent shockwaves through the quiet residential neighborhood. Residents took to social media to express their grief and share memories of the couple. One friend, Raul Gomez, posted a heartfelt tribute to Schiller, crediting her with inspiring him to become a spin instructor.
Cordes was a highly esteemed radiologist who had served his community for nearly three decades. His employer, Adventist Health Simi Valley, released a statement expressing their heartbreak over the tragic loss. “Our hearts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him as we grieve this shocking loss,” the statement read.
While the motive behind the murders remains unclear, police have assured the public that there is no immediate threat. The incident, a rare occurrence in Simi Valley, is believed to be a targeted attack.
