A woman from Florida has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after confessing to shooting a man in the head with his own firearm. The incident occurred after the man became agitated when their 8-year-old son, who has autism, soiled his pants. The woman, Laurie Adams, 39, was handed her sentence on Tuesday following her guilty plea to first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm. The victim was identified as 51-year-old Adel Tawfeek.
The tragic event unfolded on June 5, as per an affidavit. The police were called to an apartment located on the 400 block of Sheoah Boulevard in Winter Springs, north of Orlando, following a shooting report. While en route, the officers were informed by the dispatcher that the caller had confessed to shooting someone in the head.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officers discovered Tawfeek on the back porch of the home, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Adams informed the police that the incident was triggered when Tawfeek became irate after discovering that their son had soiled his pants.
According to Adams, Tawfeek began shouting at both her and their son. An arrest report indicates that Adams told investigators that after she had cleaned up their son and put him to bed, Tawfeek started yelling at her and pushed her against a wall. He then grabbed a beer and retreated to the back porch.
The report further states that Adams took approximately 15 minutes to compose herself before she went to Tawfeek’s bedroom closet, retrieved his firearm, and loaded it. Adams then walked out to the living room, where she saw Tawfeek smoking on the porch. She then approached the porch and shot Tawfeek in the head.
The affidavit also reveals that Adams had texted her mother a few days prior to the shooting, asking her to take care of her son “if anything were to happen.”
