Police say a teenage suspect was arrested after gunfire erupted inside Desert Sky Mall.
PHOENIX, Ariz. — A 17-year-old boy was killed and a 16-year-old boy was injured after a shooting inside Desert Sky Mall in west Phoenix on June 2, prompting a large police response and a homicide investigation that later resulted in the arrest of a 15-year-old suspect.
The shooting occurred inside one of the Valley’s busiest shopping centers during evening hours, sending shoppers and employees scrambling for safety as officers evacuated parts of the mall. Investigators say the incident stemmed from an argument involving a group of teenagers. The death of the 17-year-old victim has elevated the case to a homicide investigation, while detectives continue reviewing evidence and witness accounts gathered from the scene.
Phoenix police were dispatched to Desert Sky Mall near 75th Avenue and Thomas Road shortly after 8 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire inside the shopping center. As officers arrived, stores closed their doors and some businesses initiated lockdown procedures while shoppers were directed out of the building. First responders located two teenage boys suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to hospitals for emergency treatment. Authorities said the 17-year-old victim suffered critical injuries and later died. The second victim, a 16-year-old boy, survived and was reported to be recovering from injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The shooting disrupted normal operations at the mall for several hours as investigators secured evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Police detained multiple individuals while clearing the mall and working to determine whether the shooter remained on the property. Early in the investigation, authorities said none of the people initially detained were believed to be responsible for the gunfire. Detectives later reviewed surveillance footage and gathered witness statements from inside the mall. According to investigators, evidence indicated that a confrontation involving several teenagers escalated before shots were fired. Police said the suspect allegedly produced a handgun during the dispute and fired toward the group, striking the two victims. Investigators have not publicly identified the victims because of their ages. Authorities also have not released details about what triggered the argument or whether those involved knew one another before the encounter.
Desert Sky Mall serves as a major retail center in the Maryvale area of west Phoenix and routinely draws large crowds of shoppers, particularly during evening hours and school breaks. Violent incidents inside major shopping centers often generate significant concern because of the number of people present when crimes occur. In this case, officers remained at the scene throughout the night collecting evidence, documenting the area, and reviewing surveillance recordings from multiple locations inside the mall. By the following day, businesses resumed operations and the mall reopened to the public. The investigation continued, however, as homicide detectives worked to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify everyone present during the confrontation. Community members expressed concern about the violence, while law enforcement officials emphasized the importance of gathering accurate witness information.
As detectives advanced the investigation, they identified a 15-year-old male as the suspected shooter. Police arrested the juvenile and announced that he faces a charge of second-degree murder along with four counts of aggravated assault. Because the suspect is a minor, authorities have released limited identifying information. Prosecutors will determine how the case proceeds through the court system and whether additional charges are warranted. Investigators continue examining physical evidence, digital records, and witness statements as part of the ongoing case. Officials have also encouraged anyone with direct knowledge of the incident who has not yet spoken with police to come forward. Additional court proceedings are expected as the criminal case moves through the legal process.
In the hours after the shooting, emergency lights illuminated parking lots surrounding the mall while families waited for information and investigators moved between storefronts. Witnesses described a scene of confusion as shoppers attempted to leave the area and businesses followed emergency protocols. Police officers spent hours interviewing people who had been inside the mall at the time of the shooting. The investigation has focused on determining the exact timeline of the confrontation and confirming the movements of those involved before gunfire erupted. For relatives of the victims, the incident transformed an ordinary evening at a shopping center into a tragedy that drew attention across the Phoenix area. Authorities have continued urging patience as detectives complete their review of evidence and prepare reports for prosecutors.
The case remains under investigation. The 17-year-old victim has died, the surviving victim continues recovering, and the juvenile suspect faces homicide-related charges. Future court hearings and any additional findings from investigators are expected to provide a clearer picture of the events that led to the shooting.
