Elderly Man Charged with Murdering Wife with Hammer

An elderly man from Indiana is facing murder charges after allegedly killing his wife with a hammer. Terry Ogle, 79, dialed 911 on January 17 to report the death of his wife, Mary Ogle, 76. According to court documents, during the call, Ogle confessed to the dispatcher that he was responsible for his wife’s death, stating that she had been dead for some time.

Ogle reportedly declined the dispatcher’s suggestion to attempt CPR, asserting that it was too late. Upon arrival, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police found Mary Ogle lying on her back, covered with a blanket, and bleeding from a head wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services.

Terry Ogle was also found bleeding from what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound to his left wrist. He was transported to the hospital for treatment and placed under police custody. He was later charged with murder.

Court records reveal that Ogle openly discussed his actions, admitting to killing his wife with a hammer. He reportedly told authorities, “It’s a long story, I’ve been under depression for a while. So, we weren’t arguing. I just lost it. I think she’s having an affair. So, I lost it.”

In addition to his confession to the police, Ogle also reportedly texted his daughter, stating, “I’m going to jail. I killed Mary.”

Both Terry and Mary Ogle were known in their community for their work in the education field. The incident has been described as “tragic” by Tommy Thompson, the public information officer for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police. He expressed his condolences, stating, “To fathom a loss like this is just heartbreaking, gut-wrenching for this community.”
