Ex-Teacher Dies in Court Before Murder Sentence

James Paul Anderson, a 39-year-old former special education teacher and one-time clown from Texas, passed away in court on Friday after ingesting a substance believed to be drugs. This occurred just before he was set to receive a 35-year prison sentence for the murder of his wife. Anderson was found guilty of the murder of his 34-year-old wife, Victoria Anderson, in 2023, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

Anderson suffered a medical crisis shortly after his arrival at the Criminal Justice Center in Houston. Early indications suggest that he ingested drugs while waiting for his sentencing. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital by ambulance, as stated by Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen.

A court bailiff administered naloxone, a medication used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses, before Anderson was transported to the hospital. Despite these efforts, he was declared dead at 11:05 am.

Following the incident, a brown bag containing a substance resembling crystal meth was found in a nearby trash can by Anderson’s lawyer. This discovery led the judge to declare the courtroom a potential crime scene and order its closure.

Eyewitnesses reported that Anderson, who was formerly known as a clown named Mister Jazzz, had a brief discussion with his defense attorney upon his arrival in court. He then asked for a few moments of privacy, during which he was observed spitting something into a trash can. Shortly thereafter, he began to vomit. An autopsy is currently underway to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Anderson, a former employee of the Cleveland Independent School District, was arrested on September 24, 2023, after a prolonged standoff with the police. The police were summoned to his Kingwood residence after his wife called 911, stating that her husband was threatening to shoot her. Gunfire was heard over the call by the emergency dispatcher.

When the police arrived, Anderson allowed his three-year-old son to exit the house before barricading himself inside with his deceased wife’s body. He surrendered about five hours later. Authorities have noted that there were prior reports of domestic disturbances at the residence, and that Victoria Anderson had filed for divorce approximately a month before her death.
