Father Arrested After Baby Dies While He Plays Video Games

Burkburnett, Texas – A 20-year-old father has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of his 8-month-old daughter, who drowned in a bathtub last year while he was reportedly “engrossed in video games.” Justin Ray Kidwell was taken into custody on Monday and charged with felony murder in the infant’s death.

On May 14, 2023, authorities received a 911 call reporting an unresponsive infant at a residence in the 200 block of South Avenue B in Burkburnett. Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene but sadly found the baby girl deceased after being taken out of the bathtub.

Following several months of investigation, police detectives and Texas Rangers determined that the child had been left unattended in the bathtub with the water running. The investigation revealed that Kidwell, the only adult at home during the incident, was engrossed in video games, neglecting to supervise his daughter.

A forensic examination of Kidwell’s electronic devices, notably his computer, revealed a timeline indicating his preoccupation with video games while his daughter was left unsupervised, according to the police. Based on this timeline, a warrant was issued for Kidwell’s arrest, charging him with felony murder and setting a recommended bond of $500,000.

Authorities executed the arrest warrant on Monday, apprehending Kidwell to face charges in connection with his daughter’s death. The Burkburnett Police Department emphasized the critical importance of parental supervision, particularly regarding the safety and well-being of children. The loss of a young life is a devastating blow to any community, and the department expressed its condolences to all those affected.

The tragic incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the need for parental vigilance and the safety of children in all circumstances. The authorities urge all parents and caregivers to remain mindful and prioritize the supervision of their children.
