Autopsies found that all eight family members died from gunshot wounds before fires were set throughout their Grand Haven Township home.
GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Michigan father fatally shot his wife and their six children, set fires in several parts of the family’s home and then died by suicide, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said Monday after completing autopsies.
Investigators identified the adults as Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, and Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39. The children were four boys and two girls ranging in age from 5 to 15. Authorities did not publicly release the children’s names. All eight died from gunshot wounds, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies and Grand Haven firefighters were sent to the home on Riverside Trail at about 11:40 a.m. Friday, July 24, after someone reported smoke coming from the residence. Firefighters entered the smoke-filled house while working to extinguish the fire and discovered the family members inside.
The deaths were initially described as suspicious because some of the victims had visible gunshot wounds. Investigators said at the time that they were not searching for anyone outside the home but cautioned that the scene was complicated and that autopsies would be needed before they could determine what had happened.
Following the examinations, the sheriff’s office said evidence showed that Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot his wife and children before fatally shooting himself. Investigators believe fires were then intentionally started in multiple areas of the home. Authorities have not said how much time passed between the shootings and the start of the fires.
The children included a 15-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy, an 11-year-old boy, 11-year-old twin girls and a 5-year-old boy, according to authorities. Investigators have not released information about where the family members were found within the home or the sequence in which they died.
Authorities said the investigation has not established a motive. No note was found, but detectives recovered a large amount of written and electronic material that could help them understand the events leading to the deaths. Sheriff Eric DeBoer said investigators may never fully determine why the killings occurred.
Police believe the violence may have begun Thursday night and continued into early Friday morning. Neighbors reported smelling smoke earlier Friday, but responders were initially unable to locate its source. White smoke was later seen coming from the family’s home, prompting the emergency response that led to the discovery.
Amanda Karolkiewicz worked as a substitute teacher and had ties to local schools. Relatives and members of the school community remembered her as a caring mother and educator who was deeply involved in her children’s lives. The district made support available to students and employees affected by the deaths.
Community members gathered Sunday at a vigil in Grand Haven to remember the family. The deaths stunned the Lake Michigan community, where relatives, neighbors and school families were left mourning the loss of the mother and six children.
The Michigan State Police fire investigation unit assisted the sheriff’s office with the examination of the home. Investigators continue to review evidence and determine how the fires were started, but authorities said they are not seeking another suspect.
