Father Punches His 6-Month-Old in the Face: Police

An Ohio man, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, has been accused of assaulting his six-month-old child while attempting to attack the child’s mother. The man was subsequently taken to a hospital where he allegedly assaulted police officers and attempted to bite them multiple times, as per court records. The accused, identified as 23-year-old Avery Mapes, was reportedly in a state of rage, shouting racial slurs and causing a ruckus in the hospital room.

Mapes has been charged with assault, endangering children, domestic violence, obstruction, and disorderly conduct following his alleged violent outbursts. He was taken into custody on Thursday after he reportedly attacked his live-in partner and the mother of his child while in a drunken state. Court documents indicate that the woman bore several marks and bruises, evidence of Mapes’ assault, which included a punch to their six-month-old child’s face, resulting in multiple red marks and bruising.

According to police, Mapes attempted to hit the child’s mother multiple times while she was holding the six-month-old, and in the process, struck the child at least once. When law enforcement arrived at the couple’s Toledo residence, they discovered Mapes’ partner with bloody handprints on the back of her hoodie.

The probable cause statement further details the extent of the woman’s injuries, including bruising and red marks on her forehead and upper right area. It also suggests that Mapes charged at his partner before initiating his attack, and it appeared as if her arm had been forcefully squeezed.

Following his arrest, Mapes was taken to a local medical facility where he was handcuffed to a bed. Despite this, he allegedly dragged the bed around his hospital room in an attempt to assault officers. He also reportedly tried to kick and strike medical staff members and continued to shout racial slurs and profanities while at the facility.

Court documents indicate that Mapes consistently refused to follow commands. He was later released on his own recognizance with an electronic monitoring device and was ordered to stay away from his partner and child. Mapes is scheduled to appear in court on December 17.
