Father Sacrifices Life to Save Son in Tragic Accident

A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend on Lake Perris, east of Los Angeles, when a father sacrificed his own life to keep his 7-year-old son afloat after their kayak capsized. The California Department of Parks and Recreation reported that the boy was found clinging to his unconscious father’s body on Saturday afternoon, following reports of screams and signs of distress from bystanders.

The father, a 54-year-old man whose identity has not been released, is believed to have drowned while keeping his son above water. After the pair were pulled from the lake, rescuers attempted to resuscitate the father with CPR before he was rushed to a hospital in Riverside. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The 7-year-old boy was also taken to the hospital for evaluation, as stated by the Parks Department. The incident took place in the Lake Perris Recreation Area, a popular spot for water activities.

Neither the father nor the son were wearing life jackets when their kayak overturned, despite state law mandating that children aged 12 and under must wear them on any moving water vessel. This detail underscores the importance of adhering to safety regulations while engaging in water activities.

Michelle Juarez, a witness who was boating on the lake at the time, recounted the frantic efforts to save the father’s life. She estimated that CPR was performed for at least 45 minutes, and she heard calls to take the child to the ambulance.

Another family member watched in distress as rescuers tried to save the man. The Parks Department expressed its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy, and reiterated the importance of wearing life jackets while boating.
