A fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday on the FDR Drive in Manhattan, resulting in the death of a female driver and serious injuries to her passenger. The vehicle, a Tesla, flipped over and subsequently caught fire after colliding with a guardrail near 70th Street on the Upper East Side, according to the New York Police Department.
The wreckage of the electric vehicle was scattered across the road, with large pieces of debris strewn about. The severity of the crash caused both the driver and her 26-year-old male passenger to be ejected from the car, which was engulfed in flames.
The identity of the female driver, who was declared dead at the scene, has not yet been released by the police. The male passenger, however, survived the crash. He was immediately transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell, where he is currently in a stable condition, as per the authorities.
The cause of the fiery crash is still under investigation by the police. It remains unclear whether the driver was exceeding the speed limit at the time of the accident.
Following the incident, all northbound lanes of the FDR Drive were closed for several miles. Fire crews were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the flames and clear the debris.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on the road, even in the early hours of the morning when traffic is typically lighter. It also raises questions about the safety of electric vehicles, particularly in high-impact crashes.
As the investigation continues, authorities will be looking into all possible factors that could have contributed to the crash, including the condition of the vehicle, the driver’s actions, and the state of the road at the time.
