Firearm Discharge at Local Restaurant Injures Three

A local dining establishment was the scene of an unusual incident just before 1 p.m., when an employee accidentally discharged a firearm, injuring himself and two patrons. The mishandling of the weapon by the employee resulted in a bullet passing through his hand and striking two customers, according to Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald.

The firearm was reportedly discovered within the premises of the restaurant. The employee, while attempting to handle the weapon, unintentionally fired it. The bullet first went through his hand, causing a serious injury, before it continued its trajectory through a doorway, hitting two customers.

The injuries sustained included a gunshot wound through the employee’s hand, damaging the webbing between his fingers, a through-and-through wound on a customer’s left forearm, and a minor injury to another customer’s wrist. Fortunately, none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

Emergency services were called to the scene, transporting one individual to the hospital, while the other two received medical treatment on-site. The employee and the customers involved are all expected to make a full recovery.

The origins of the firearm remain unclear. Initial reports suggest it might have been found in an upstairs area of the restaurant, but authorities are continuing their investigation. Fitzgerald emphasized the importance of proper firearm handling, pointing out the unnecessary harm caused to innocent bystanders in this incident.

Detectives are conducting a thorough investigation and will present their findings to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Any potential charges will be determined following this review.

This incident highlights the dangers associated with improper firearm handling and serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with owning a weapon.
