A former church musician from Florida, William C. Broyles, has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the brutal murder of his wife and two adult children. The horrific crime took place in their family home nearly four years ago. Broyles confessed to shooting each family member multiple times, claiming he did so to ensure they didn’t suffer. The life sentence was handed down by Nassau County Judge Steve M. Fahlgren on Tuesday.
Broyles pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder for the killings of his wife, Candace L. Broyles, 57, his daughter, Cora Lynn Broyles, 27, and his son, Aaron Christopher Broyles, 28. The tragic incident unfolded on the morning of December 1, 2021, when Nassau County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call from the family’s residence in Callahan, Florida. The caller was Broyles himself, who confessed to the dispatcher that he had shot his wife, son, and daughter and was waiting outside on the driveway.
Upon arrival, first responders found Broyles unarmed and lying in the driveway. A search of the residence revealed a gruesome scene with all three family members dead, each suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Broyles later told investigators that he had shot each family member multiple times to ensure they didn’t suffer, according to Sheriff Bill Leeper.
The investigation revealed that Broyles began his killing spree by shooting his wife in their living room. He then moved to his daughter’s room, shooting and killing her as she was waking up. Broyles then forced his way into his son’s room and shot him. After firing at least one round, Broyles left the room, retrieved another loaded gun, and returned to shoot his son several more times.
Broyles had initially planned to take his own life after the murders, but he confessed to investigators that he was unable to follow through with it. When asked why he didn’t shoot himself, Broyles stated that he was too scared to do so. The motive behind Broyles’ horrific actions remains unclear, as authorities have not released any details.
Authorities confirmed that there was no history of domestic violence in the Broyles family, and deputies had never been called to their residence prior to the day of the murders. Before his arrest, Broyles had served as the church musician at Hodges Boulevard Presbyterian Church for 23 years. He had previously worked in the aerospace and medical device industries.
