A former college basketball player from Mississippi tragically lost his life in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident over the weekend. Cameron Woodall, a celebrated athlete who had previously led Raymond High School to a state championship victory, succumbed to his injuries after losing control and overturning his ATV. The incident, as reported by Interim Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard, took place in Raymond, Mississippi on Midway Road around 11:25 p.m. on Saturday. Woodall was 26 years old.
The accident occurred while Woodall and another individual, who was on a separate ATV, were traveling down the road. The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, AMR, the Byram Volunteer Fire Department, and the Raymond Volunteer Fire Department were among the first responders at the scene. Woodall was pronounced dead due to his injuries, while the second person was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Woodall, fondly known as ‘Big Cam’, was a former player for Tougaloo College and was remembered by the institution for his significant contributions. The college’s athletics department expressed their sorrow on Instagram, highlighting Woodall’s larger-than-life presence, fierce competitiveness on the court, and his kind-hearted spirit off the court. They extended their deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office is spearheading the investigation into the accident, which is still ongoing. Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones expressed his condolences to Woodall’s family, friends, and the Raymond basketball community, acknowledging the profound loss they are experiencing.
Woodall’s basketball career was marked by significant achievements. He played a pivotal role in leading Raymond High to state championships in 2017 and 2018. Following his high school career, he continued to play at the collegiate level, first at Copiah-Lincoln Community College and later at Tougaloo College, where he played most recently in the 2022-23 season.
