LIMERICK, Maine – A family vacation took a devastating turn when a 6-year-old girl was fatally injured by a broken piece of a badminton racket in Maine. Lucy Morgan, from New Jersey, tragically passed away on Wednesday, four days after the shocking accident occurred during a lakeside getaway.
The incident unfolded on Saturday while the Morgan family, consisting of six members, was enjoying their final day at a rental cottage. According to Lucy’s father, Jesse Morgan, a pastor at Green Pond Bible Chapel, the family was having a quick lunch by the lake when their children decided to play badminton in the front yard.
In a blog entry titled “Calamity Strikes,” Morgan stated, “Due to a freak accident with a racquet that broke on a downward swing, a sharp piece had entered Lucy’s skull while she was sitting on the sideline and caused catastrophic injury.”
According to Maine State Police, the 10-year-old brother unintentionally caused the injury when the aluminum shaft of the racket dislodged from its wooden handle and struck Lucy’s head. She was immediately rushed to a local hospital and then airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland. During surgery, part of Lucy’s skull was removed to relieve pressure, but she lost all brain function and the ability to breathe on her own.
Doctors informed the family that the chances of Lucy’s recovery were very slim due to the severity of the injury. The young girl ultimately succumbed to the injuries on Wednesday morning, devastating her siblings, Silas (10), Shiloh (8), and Atticus (4), who are having a hard time understanding and coping with the loss.
The family is now grappling with grief and mourning the loss of their beloved daughter. In a heartfelt blog post, Jesse Morgan shared their pain, writing, “Every time I looked into the rearview mirror, wishing I saw Lucy munching on some chicken nuggets after we stopped at Wendy’s and only ordered for 5.”
Lucy’s funeral will be held on June 15 at her father’s church, providing a space for the community to come together and commemorate her life.
