Funeral Home Displays Wrong Body, Leading Relative to Suffer Heart Attack

A California family experienced a shocking incident at a memorial service for their deceased relative, Joey Espinosa, 44, who had recently passed away due to heart failure. The family was attending the service at Forest Lawn Covina Hills funeral home when they discovered that the body in the casket was not Espinosa’s. The funeral home staff had mistakenly placed a stranger’s body on display.

Laura Levario, Espinosa’s aunt, expressed her family’s distress to local media, stating that the funeral home staff did not know where her nephew’s body was. Following the mix-up, the staff led the family to a different room within the facility, but the body presented there was not Espinosa’s either.

The situation took a turn for the worse when Levario’s husband suffered a heart attack in the chapel due to the distressing circumstances. He was hospitalized and placed on life support, where he remained unconscious for three days.

Forest Lawn attributed the distressing incident to a “scheduling error”. The funeral home offered the family a mere $200 in compensation, a fraction of the nearly $20,000 funeral cost. This gesture added insult to injury for the grieving family.

In response to the incident, the family has filed a lawsuit against the funeral home, citing emotional distress and negligence. Their lawyer, Elvis Tran, criticized the funeral home for their handling of the situation. He stated that instead of mourning and remembering their loved one, the family was left searching for Espinosa’s body.

Despite the mishap, the funeral home was eventually able to locate Espinosa’s body and proceed with the service after over an hour of confusion. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Similar mistakes have occurred at other funeral homes, leading to lawsuits and accusations of negligence in the handling of human remains.
