Girl, 4, Suffers Stroke Months After Chickenpox

Olivia Elliot spent nearly eight weeks in a hospital after doctors linked severe arterial inflammation to her earlier chickenpox infection.

WEST LOTHIAN, Scotland — A 4-year-old Scottish girl suffered a stroke about six months after contracting chickenpox, with specialists linking severe inflammation in a major artery to the earlier viral infection, according to her family’s account and published reports.

Olivia Elliot became ill in June 2025 after waking with vomiting and a headache, symptoms her mother, Rebecca Elliot, initially believed were caused by a routine childhood illness. Her condition became more concerning when she struggled to sit upright, fell toward her left side and could not properly grip her mother’s hand. Olivia was taken for emergency medical care, where scans and other tests later confirmed that she had suffered a stroke.

Doctors performed CT and MRI scans, blood tests and a lumbar puncture as they investigated what had happened. They found severe inflammation affecting a major artery and believed the inflammation was linked to the chickenpox Olivia had experienced around Christmas 2024. The illness had appeared relatively mild at the time, and her family said she seemed to recover before the stroke occurred months later.

Olivia temporarily lost movement on the left side of her body. Her speech became slurred, and one side of her face drooped. Her mother said the child also lost the ability to eat and speak during the most serious stage of her illness. She remained hospitalized for nearly eight weeks, from late June until Aug. 11, 2025, before continuing her recovery outside the hospital.

The case reflects a rare but recognized connection between chickenpox, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, and childhood stroke. Published research has found that the risk of ischemic stroke can rise during the six months after a child develops chickenpox, although stroke remains uncommon in children. Pediatric strokes can result from several conditions involving blood vessels, clotting, infections and other underlying health problems.

Olivia had been born nine weeks prematurely and was previously diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy after brain damage was detected when she was a baby. Her mother said doctors told the family that the stroke was not caused by Olivia’s cerebral palsy. Years of physiotherapy before the stroke may, however, have helped prepare her for the intensive rehabilitation that followed.

After leaving the hospital, Olivia began primary school within days. She initially used a wheelchair at school while rebuilding her strength and mobility. Now 5, she can walk independently around her home and uses a walker for support at school, according to her mother. Rebecca Elliot has since established Olivia’s Steps Foundation to support families raising children with disabilities.

Stroke is far less common in children than in adults, but pediatric specialists say symptoms can include sudden weakness or numbness on one side, difficulty speaking, facial drooping, loss of balance, severe headache and vomiting. Because some symptoms can resemble more common childhood illnesses, diagnosis in younger children can sometimes be delayed.

Olivia’s case comes as chickenpox vaccination becomes part of the routine childhood immunization program in the United Kingdom. Beginning in January 2026, the combined MMRV vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella, was introduced into the routine schedule. Eligibility and timing vary by a child’s date of birth, with a catch-up program planned for some older children.

Olivia continues rehabilitation as she works to regain strength and mobility. Her family has publicly shared her experience to raise awareness that stroke can occur in young children and that serious complications can, in rare cases, follow infections that initially appear mild.
