Police are investigating the fatal stabbing of the music writer known for work with major international artists.
LONDON, England — Grammy-winning songwriter Talay Riley, known professionally under a name recognized across the pop music industry, was found dead Friday morning after suffering stab wounds at a property in east London, authorities said. He was 35.
Riley’s death has prompted a homicide investigation by the Metropolitan Police and renewed attention on the career of a songwriter whose credits included collaborations with some of the world’s best-known recording artists. Investigators have made several arrests and continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack, while family members, fellow musicians and industry figures have paid tribute to his work and legacy.
Police said officers responded to a property in the Silvertown area of east London on Friday morning and discovered Riley, whose birth name was Mark Orabiyi, with fatal stab wounds. Emergency medical personnel attempted to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said another man in his 20s was also found with multiple stab wounds and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Officials said his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Detectives began collecting evidence from the property and surrounding area as forensic teams worked to establish a timeline of events leading up to the attack. The circumstances that resulted in the violence remain under investigation, and police have not publicly disclosed a motive.
Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke said investigators moved quickly after the discovery and arrested three people on suspicion of murder. A 27-year-old man was later released on bail pending additional inquiries. Police also detained a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, but both were released with no further action. Authorities have not announced any charges. Investigators continue to review evidence and interview potential witnesses. Police have not said whether the people arrested knew Riley or whether they were present when the incident occurred. Officials have also not released details about the relationship between Riley and the second stabbing victim. Detectives said inquiries remain active and urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
Riley built a successful career as a songwriter and producer, earning recognition across multiple genres. His work appeared on projects involving artists including Britney Spears, Dua Lipa, H.E.R., Jessie J, Usher and Chris Brown. Industry colleagues often described him as a versatile writer capable of moving between pop, R&B and dance music. One of his most notable achievements came through his contribution to an award-winning project by H.E.R., helping secure Grammy recognition. Over more than a decade in music, Riley accumulated a catalog of songs that reached international audiences and appeared on commercially successful albums and singles. His work behind the scenes helped shape recordings that reached charts in multiple countries, even as his name remained less familiar to many listeners than the artists who performed the songs.
Family members remembered Riley as a devoted relative whose influence extended beyond music. In a statement released after his death, relatives described him as a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend. His brother, Michael Orabiyi, shared a public tribute expressing grief and celebrating Riley’s life and accomplishments. Messages from fellow musicians and industry professionals also appeared across social media, with many noting his creative talent and generosity. Friends recalled a songwriter who frequently mentored younger artists and collaborated across genres. The reaction highlighted the reach of Riley’s professional network and the impact he had on colleagues who worked with him throughout his career. While investigators focused on the criminal inquiry, tributes continued to grow from those who said his music touched millions of listeners around the world.
As of Monday, no murder charges had been announced and police said the investigation remained ongoing. Detectives are expected to continue reviewing evidence and conducting interviews in the coming days as they seek to determine exactly what happened and whether additional arrests will be made.
