A tragic incident unfolded at a Texas high school track meet when a star athlete was fatally stabbed in a dispute over a seating arrangement. The victim, Austin Metcalf, was a junior at Memorial High School in Frisco ISD. The incident occurred on April 2 at Kuykendall Stadium during a track and field championship between local schools.
Metcalf was in the audience when a disagreement erupted with 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, a senior at Centennial High School. According to Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father, Anthony was informed he was in the wrong seat, which led to him drawing a knife and initiating the fatal assault.
The attack was witnessed by Austin’s twin brother, Hunter, who was born just two minutes after Austin. Despite rushing to his brother’s aid, Hunter was unable to save him. A visibly distressed Hunter recounted the incident, stating he tried to help his brother but declined to share further details.
Jeff Metcalf described the heartbreaking scene of Hunter holding Austin, trying to stop the bleeding. Austin ultimately succumbed to his injuries in his twin brother’s arms. After learning about the incident, Jeff rushed to the scene, only to find Austin on a gurney, not breathing. Despite immediate medical attention and prayers, Austin was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Following the incident, Anthony was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is currently detained at Collin County Jail, with no bond set. Jeff Metcalf, while forgiving his son’s alleged killer, questioned Anthony’s upbringing and the values he was taught.
Austin Metcalf was a promising athlete, remembered as a star linebacker with dreams of playing college football. He had recently been voted his team’s Most Valuable Player and maintained a 4.0 GPA. His father organized a GoFundMe campaign in his memory, describing Austin as a bright young man with a great future, a leader, and a passionate football player whose smile would light up a room.
