Zachery Ty Bryan, a familiar face from the hit sitcom “Home Improvement,” and his girlfriend, Johnnie Faye Cartwright, were recently taken into custody in Eugene, Oregon. Bryan was arrested for violating the conditions of his probation related to a domestic violence case. Consequently, he was not granted bail and is expected to remain in custody until Wednesday.
Bryan, 44, was previously handed a 36-month probation sentence in 2023 following a conviction for domestic violence. His probation period is slated to conclude in 2026. The actor’s initial arrest was on charges of assault and robbery following a dispute with an unidentified woman. It is still unclear whether the woman involved in the incident was Cartwright. Bryan’s probation conditions explicitly forbade him from contacting the victim without prior consent.
Cartwright, meanwhile, is facing a slew of charges, including driving under the influence, three counts of reckless endangerment, and an attempt to commit first-degree assault. Her arraignment is set for Monday. Bryan, who was married to Carly Matros from 2007 to 2020, shares several children with Cartwright.
In 2020, Bryan was accused of assaulting Cartwright and was charged with felony strangulation, menacing, assault, and harassment. According to a police report, Cartwright alleged that Bryan had yanked her hair and struck her over missing phone chargers. She claimed that Bryan’s abusive behavior had started a few weeks earlier, accusing him of choking her nearly to the point of unconsciousness. Bryan was only convicted of menacing and assault at the time. He later asserted that the incident had been blown out of proportion and that he had not been excessively physical.
Bryan’s history with law enforcement extends beyond these incidents. In February 2024, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Riverside, California, and again for the same offense and driving without a license in Custer County, Oklahoma, in October 2024. On January 1, 2025, Bryan was taken into custody after allegedly punching a woman multiple times and threatening her life. It is still uncertain if the woman involved was Cartwright. Earlier this month, an unidentified former partner of Bryan was granted a five-year restraining order against him after accusing him of physical assault in July.
