In a tragic incident in Ohio, a deceased infant was discovered on the driveway of a residence in Cleveland. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the discovery, which took place in the West Boulevard neighborhood, on the 2200 block of W. 73rd St. on a recent Saturday.
The Cleveland Police Department reported that officers were initially dispatched to the scene due to a suspected overdose at approximately 2:17 a.m. Upon arrival, they found Cleveland EMS personnel already attending to a 39-year-old woman. The woman was reportedly experiencing an altered mental state, presumably due to the influence of an unidentified substance.
Cleveland Police Sgt. Diaz stated that during their initial investigation, officers were informed of the possible presence of an infant in the vicinity. The officers promptly conducted a search and discovered the baby inside a cloth shopping bag on the driveway of the residence.
Sgt. Diaz further explained that EMS personnel assessed the infant at the scene and pronounced the child deceased. The mother, whose identity has not been disclosed, was transported to a local hospital for further medical attention.
The cause of the infant’s death is yet to be determined and will be ascertained by the medical examiner. Sgt. Diaz expressed the emotional toll such incidents take on law enforcement personnel, stating, “Officers are human beings. We are parents, grandparents, so these types of incidents are always difficult and it never gets easy. It is still difficult to see a young child lose its life.”
