A Michigan woman, aged 46, has been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the brutal murder of her boyfriend’s 6-year-old son. Hilary Ulp was found guilty of first-degree felony murder by a jury last month, following a six-week trial. The Macomb County Circuit Judge, Diane Druzinski, delivered the mandatory life sentence for the tragic killing of young Nicolas Kuras, as announced by the authorities.
The case has been described as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of abuse and the fragility of life. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido expressed his condolences to the victim’s family, who have suffered immense pain and loss over the years. He expressed hope that the sentence would bring some measure of justice and healing to those who loved Nicolas.
Ulp was already serving time in prison for causing the injuries that eventually led to Nicolas’ death years later. The county prosecutor’s office reported that Nicolas was initially hospitalized with severe injuries, including blunt force trauma to the head, a broken collar bone, and multiple broken ribs on May 15, 2015. He was only 14 months old at the time.
Investigations revealed that Ulp, who was babysitting Nicolas at the time of the incident, was responsible for the severe physical abuse. She was arrested, prosecuted, and convicted of first-degree child abuse in 2016. Subsequently, a judge ordered Ulp to serve 11 to 30 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections.
Statements from Nicolas’ father during police interviews suggested that Ulp’s motive for harming Nicolas was jealousy. The father reported that Ulp was babysitting, a regular occurrence, while he was out. The following morning, he found the boy crying uncontrollably and instructed Ulp to call 911.
Ulp reportedly told the police that Nicolas might have been injured by falling off the bed and hitting his head on the door frame. She also suggested that she might have hugged Nicolas too tightly, causing injuries. However, Nicolas never recovered from the attack, which left him unable to care for himself. He succumbed to his injuries and died on Jan. 7, 2021, at almost 7 years old. Ulp, who was already in prison, was then charged with felony murder.
