Brandon Blackstock, a renowned talent manager and the former husband of singer Kelly Clarkson, has died at the age of 48. Blackstock’s family confirmed his passing, revealing that he had been bravely battling cancer for more than three years. His death was peaceful, surrounded by his loved ones. The family expressed their appreciation for the public’s support and prayers, and asked for privacy during this difficult time.
On August 6, Clarkson revealed Blackstock’s illness, which led her to delay her Las Vegas residency to spend time with their children, River, 11, and Remington, 9. Clarkson, who usually maintains a private personal life, disclosed that the father of her children had been sick and that she needed to be fully available for them. She thanked her fans for their understanding and compassion during this challenging period.
Blackstock, who also had two children, Savannah and Seth, from a previous marriage, became a grandfather in 2022 when Savannah had a son, Lake. In March 2024, Blackstock was seen at the Houston Rodeo with River and Remington, his brother Shelby, and his mother, Reba McEntire. McEntire was formerly married to Blackstock’s father, Narvel Blackstock.
Blackstock and Clarkson’s paths first crossed at a rehearsal for the Academy of Country Music Awards in May 2006. At that time, Blackstock was still married to his ex-wife, Melissa Ashworth. Clarkson remembered being attracted to Blackstock’s humor and charisma, and foresaw that they would eventually be together. They reconnected several years later at the Super Bowl and tied the knot in October 2013. Clarkson’s 2015 song “Piece By Piece” was a heartfelt homage to Blackstock and the sense of stability he brought to her life.
After their marriage, Blackstock, who was also managing country singer Blake Shelton, assumed the role of Clarkson’s manager. Clarkson lauded Blackstock’s managerial abilities, highlighting his significant contribution to Shelton’s successful career. However, the couple’s relationship culminated in a divorce in 2020, which was finalized in 2022.
Blackstock is survived by his sons Seth and Remington, daughters Savannah and River, grandson Lake, father Narvel Blackstock, mother Elisa Gayle Ritter, and siblings Shelby, Shawna, and Chassidy.
