Law Grad Suffers Cardiac Arrest During Bar Exam; Test Continues

A recent graduate of Fordham Law School suffered a cardiac arrest while taking the New York State Bar Examination at Hofstra University’s sports complex in Hempstead, Long Island. Despite the medical emergency, the examination was not immediately halted, causing distress among the other test-takers.

The incident occurred just before the lunch break on the second day of the examination. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, collapsed from her chair and went into medical distress. Hofstra University’s public safety officers promptly administered CPR and other life-saving measures until paramedics arrived on the scene. The woman was then rushed to a local hospital, but her condition remains unknown.

Despite the unsettling incident, the examination continued without interruption. When the test-takers returned from their lunch break, the scene had been cleared, and no further mention was made of the incident. This lack of acknowledgment and the decision to continue the exam despite the emergency upset many of the law students present.

One law student expressed their concern to Newsday, stating, “That’s a real person who could be dying right in front of us, and we’re still being expected to continue to finish our questions for this exam.” The student further emphasized the difficulty of witnessing such a distressing event and then being expected to immediately refocus on the exam.

The state Board of Law Examiners, which administers the tests, defended the proctors’ actions. They stated that the event occurred only a few minutes before the scheduled end of the exam session and that their staff came to the examinee’s aid as soon as they were alerted to the situation.

However, some students disagreed with this account. One student, Isaac, claimed that the proctors did not act with enough urgency and even refused to seek assistance when asked by the students around the woman.

In the aftermath of the incident, Nicole Lefton, a Hofstra Law School instructor and head of academic support and bar exam preparation, assured test-takers that support services were available. She acknowledged the distressing nature of the incident and its potential impact on the students.
