The woman was hospitalized in stable condition, while the suspect was held on a $500,000 bond.
MESA, Ariz. — A Mesa man faces an attempted murder charge after prosecutors alleged that he stabbed his wife 24 times during an attack at an East Valley apartment Saturday.
Nathaniel Gotham made his first court appearance Sunday, according to reports citing statements made by Maricopa County prosecutors. A judge set his secured appearance bond at $500,000 and scheduled his next court appearance for July 17. The allegations have not been proven in court, and Gotham is presumed innocent unless convicted.
Mesa police officers responded Saturday to an apartment near University Drive and 40th Street after receiving a report of a stabbing. Officers found Gotham’s wife suffering from numerous injuries that appeared to have been caused by a sharp object, police said. Emergency personnel took her to a hospital with serious injuries.
The woman was later reported to be in stable condition. Authorities have not publicly identified her, and additional information about her recovery was not immediately available. Police have also not released a complete account of what happened before the violence began or whether anyone else was inside the apartment.
During Gotham’s initial court appearance, prosecutors alleged that the woman suffered injuries to several areas of her body. They also said she had wounds to her hands that appeared consistent with efforts to protect herself. The extent of any lasting injuries has not been disclosed.
Prosecutors said Gotham allegedly acknowledged attacking his wife while speaking with law enforcement. They further alleged that he made a statement describing an intent to hurt her and stop her from talking. Those statements are allegations presented during the early stage of the criminal case and have not been tested at trial.
Gotham was booked in connection with the attack and faces one count of attempted murder. Publicly available reports did not immediately say whether prosecutors expect to file additional charges or whether a defense attorney had been appointed to represent him.
An attempted murder charge generally requires prosecutors to prove that a defendant intentionally took a substantial step toward causing another person’s death. The exact legal theory, evidence and possible sentencing range in Gotham’s case will depend on the formal charging documents and later court proceedings.
The case remains under investigation by Mesa police. Gotham is due back in court July 17, while authorities have not released further information about the victim’s condition or the circumstances that led to the alleged attack.
