DETROIT, Mich. — Detroit police are investigating the deaths of a man and woman found inside a northwest-side home Thursday night, while authorities work to identify the two people and determine the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Officers were called about 9:30 p.m. to a residence in the 15500 block of Stoepel Street, according to the Detroit Police Department. The man and woman were found dead inside the home. As of late Friday, police had not released their names, ages or causes of death.
The Detroit Police Department said there was no threat to the public. Investigators were working with the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office to establish the identities of the two people. Authorities had not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect.
Police also had not released a possible motive or explained what may have happened inside the residence. Officials had not said when the two people died or disclosed what evidence, if any, investigators recovered from the property. The cause and manner of each death remained undetermined in the information made public.
Neighbors told CBS Detroit that a strong odor had been noticeable near the property before officers arrived. One neighbor, identified by the station only as Tracy, said she had noticed the smell for about two weeks and filed a complaint with the city more than a week before the bodies were found.
Other residents also told the station they had noticed the odor. A CBS Detroit crew reporting from the neighborhood Friday said the smell remained noticeable while police continued working at the home. Authorities had not established publicly whether the odor indicated how long the two people had been inside the residence.
Investigators remained at the Stoepel Street property Friday, with officers seen entering and leaving the home as the inquiry continued. Police had not disclosed what prompted the original call to the residence beyond confirming that officers were sent there Thursday night.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths remained unclear Saturday. Detroit police and the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office had not publicly identified the man or woman, and officials had not announced causes of death, a suspect or an arrest.
