Man Arrested for Brutal Killing of Grandparents

Mount Hermon, Louisiana – A 23-year-old man, Colby Stokes, has been taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder in the death of his grandparents. The tragic incident occurred on July 3 in the quiet town of Mount Hermon, about 75 miles northeast of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

According to authorities, Stokes allegedly shot his grandparents, Beverly Stokes and Carley Stokes, inside their home before walking to a neighbor’s house and confessing to the crime. The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from the neighbor, who reported that Stokes had admitted to the killings.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies discovered the elderly couple suffering from gunshot wounds. Carley Stokes was pronounced dead at the scene, while Beverly Stokes was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after.

Stokes now faces additional charges including cruelty to animals, second-degree aggravated battery, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Originally charged with second-degree manslaughter, the charges were upgraded by authorities on Thursday.

Sheriff Jason Smith revealed that Stokes had a history of run-ins with the law, including a 2018 arrest for burglary. Smith added that the suspect had struggled with mental health issues and substance abuse problems.

While a motive for the murder has not been disclosed, friends of the family released a statement expressing their grief and acknowledging the heartbreaking situation faced by the family.

Colby Stokes is currently being held without bond as the investigation continues.
