Man Arrested While Attempting to Bury Assault Victim Alive

A man from Florida was apprehended while attempting to dig a grave for another man he had reportedly assaulted, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was still alive at the time of the incident. The suspect, 29-year-old Giovanni Bubenik, allegedly attacked the man at a transient camp in DeLand, Florida, hitting him multiple times in the back of the head.

The victim was discovered by sheriff’s deputies on March 15, an event captured on body camera footage by the police department and later shared on social media. The arrest of Bubenik on March 21 was also recorded, with the department’s K-9 unit playing a crucial role in locating him.

The sheriff’s office reported that the victim was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition. Although he has since regained consciousness, police have indicated that he may suffer from significant long-term injuries and memory loss.

Bubenik was located by deputies at a residence where he was hiding behind a shed. He was identified as a suspect following an investigation into the alleged assault. It is alleged that Bubenik began digging a grave for the injured man in the woods near the transient camp.

Upon his arrest, Bubenik was charged with attempted first-degree murder and was held without bond by the Volusia County Division of Corrections. He was also charged with obstructing an officer during arrest without violence. Bubenik is set to be arraigned in court on April 10.
