Investigators said officers discovered the woman’s body during a welfare check that led to a homicide investigation.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A Missouri man has been charged after authorities found his wife dead inside the couple’s home during a welfare check, a discovery that investigators said quickly turned into a homicide investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Police said officers were sent to the residence Tuesday evening after relatives reported they had not been able to contact the woman for several days. Responding officers forced entry into the home and located the victim dead inside a bedroom, according to court documents released Thursday. Investigators later arrested the woman’s husband after detectives said evidence collected at the scene and statements made during questioning raised concerns about his involvement in her death.
Authorities identified the victim as 42-year-old Melissa Carter, who was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Investigators said visible injuries on Carter’s body prompted detectives to request assistance from the county medical examiner’s office. Police have not yet released an official cause of death pending autopsy and toxicology results. Neighbors told investigators they had noticed unusual activity around the home earlier in the week, including vehicles arriving late at night and periods when the residence appeared dark and unattended. Officers later detained Carter’s husband, 45-year-old Daniel Carter, for questioning before prosecutors approved charges connected to the case.
According to charging documents, detectives said Daniel Carter initially provided inconsistent timelines about when he last saw his wife alive. Investigators alleged surveillance footage and cellphone records contradicted portions of his account. Police also said officers recovered physical evidence from inside the home that was sent for forensic analysis. Court records show Carter was formally charged with second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. He remained in custody Thursday at the Greene County Jail pending an initial court appearance. Authorities said no additional suspects are being sought at this time.
The case has drawn attention across the Springfield area because of the circumstances surrounding the welfare check and the length of time relatives reportedly went without hearing from the victim. Friends described Melissa Carter as active in community organizations and local school events involving the couple’s children. Several neighbors said police presence around the home increased significantly overnight as crime scene investigators photographed the property and collected evidence from multiple rooms. Detectives spent several hours interviewing nearby residents and reviewing neighborhood surveillance footage. Officials declined to discuss whether investigators had previously responded to domestic disturbance calls involving the household.
Legal proceedings in the case are expected to move quickly in the coming days as prosecutors prepare formal evidence disclosures and investigators await autopsy findings. Court officials said Daniel Carter is scheduled to appear before a judge Friday afternoon for a bond hearing. Prosecutors may seek additional charges depending on the outcome of forensic testing and medical examiner reports. Police said detectives continue reviewing digital evidence, financial records and witness statements as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not indicated whether children were present at the home at the time investigators discovered the victim.
Outside the residence Thursday, yellow police tape remained stretched across the driveway while neighbors stopped to leave flowers near the front walkway. Some residents described the neighborhood as normally quiet and said the investigation left many families shaken. “It’s heartbreaking for everyone who knew them,” neighbor Karen Whitmore said while standing near the scene. Officers continued moving evidence containers from the home throughout the afternoon as investigators worked inside alongside forensic technicians. Authorities urged residents to avoid speculation while the investigation remains active.
Police said additional information may be released after the medical examiner completes the autopsy and investigators finish processing evidence recovered from the home. Daniel Carter remained jailed Thursday evening as homicide detectives continued the investigation.
