A man from northern Virginia, Brendan Banfield, 39, has been charged with four counts of aggravated murder and one count of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The charges stem from a double murder that occurred in February 2023, according to a joint statement from the Fairfax County Police Department and the Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. The victims were Banfield’s wife, Christine Ann Banfield, 37, and Joseph Nathan Ryan, 39, who was not a resident of the Banfield home.
The murders took place in the Banfield’s two-story house on Stable Brook Way in Herndon, a medium-sized town within the Washington, D.C., metro area. The circumstances surrounding the deaths have been shrouded in mystery, but law enforcement now believes they have pieced together the complex narrative.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis stated that the deaths of Joseph Ryan and Christine Banfield were indeed murders. The first person arrested in connection with the murders was Juliana Peres Magalhaes, 24, the former live-in nanny for the Banfield’s preschool-age daughter. Magalhaes was the first to call 911 on the day of the murders, initially hanging up before calling back to report that her friend was injured.
Banfield then took the phone and claimed that he had shot Ryan, alleging that Ryan had entered their home and stabbed his wife. However, the circumstances surrounding Ryan’s presence in the Banfield home, with his car parked in the driveway, raised suspicions. Police Chief Davis noted that there was no forced entry, indicating that this was not a home invasion.
The defendants claimed that Magalhaes had left the home with the Banfield’s daughter on the morning of the murders, only to return because she had forgotten their pre-packed lunches. Upon seeing an unfamiliar car in the driveway, she called Brendan Banfield, who rushed home from a nearby McDonald’s. Upon entering the house, they allegedly found Ryan in a bedroom with Christine Banfield, who had been stabbed multiple times in the neck.
While Brendan Banfield initially claimed to have shot and killed Ryan, Magalhaes later admitted to shooting Ryan in the chest with a second gun. The relationship between Magalhaes and Brendan Banfield also came into question, with Magalhaes initially denying a romantic relationship, only for her attorney to later confirm it.
In April, Magalhaes was indicted for Ryan’s death on one count each of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Investigators believe that Ryan was lured to the Banfield home by someone posing as Christine Banfield on a fetish website, with the intention of removing Christine from the picture so that Brendan Banfield and Magalhaes could be together.
Law enforcement alleges that the messages exchanged on the fetish website between the victims, including arrangements for a meeting on the day of the murders, did not match Christine Banfield’s usual manner of communication. The investigation is ongoing, with the expectation that more individuals may be held accountable for the crime.
The charges against Brendan Banfield will be presented to a jury, with prosecutors seeking a wide range of options for the jury to consider. Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano explained that the multiple counts of murder were filed to cover all possible elements of the crime that could be proven at trial.
