TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida man has been convicted in the killing of his former girlfriend after prosecutors said he used a claw hammer to attack her inside her home when he realized their relationship was permanently over.
The case centered on the death of a woman prosecutors said had tried to distance herself from the defendant in the weeks before the attack. Authorities said the victim blocked the man’s calls and messages and was attempting to move forward with her life when he entered her residence and carried out the fatal assault. Jurors found the defendant guilty after hearing testimony from investigators, forensic experts and people close to the couple.
According to prosecutors, the attack happened after the defendant became increasingly angry over the breakup and the victim’s decision to stop communicating with him. Investigators said evidence presented during trial showed the man brought a claw hammer to the scene and struck the woman repeatedly in the head. Prosecutors told jurors the force of the blows caused catastrophic injuries, including a fractured skull.
Detectives testified that officers responded after receiving reports connected to the victim’s home and later found evidence of a violent struggle. Crime scene investigators documented blood evidence, damage inside the residence and injuries consistent with repeated blunt-force trauma. Medical examiners testified that the woman suffered multiple fatal wounds and likely had little opportunity to defend herself during the attack.
