A Michigan man, aged 66, has been found guilty of first-degree murder for the brutal killing of his wife in their home. The jury in Oakland County delivered a unanimous verdict on Tuesday, convicting Vincent F. Vuichard for the 2021 murder of his 59-year-old wife, Tanya Vuichard, according to local authorities.
The Oakland County District Attorney’s Office released a statement detailing the crime. Vincent Vuichard reportedly assaulted and killed Tanya Vuichard around May 17, 2021. Two days later, deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check request at the Vuichard residence in Commerce Township, Michigan, approximately 35 miles northwest of Detroit.
The request for a welfare check originated from Tanya Vuichard’s coworkers at Novi Public School District, where she had been an administrative assistant for three decades. Her colleagues contacted the authorities when she failed to report to work. Upon arrival at the Vuichard home, detectives were kept waiting for a considerable amount of time before Vincent Vuichard allowed them entry.
Upon opening the door, Vincent Vuichard was observed to have deep scratches on his face and blood on his shoe, according to local news reports. When questioned about his injuries, he stated that he and his wife had had a disagreement the previous night and claimed she was out running errands.
Once inside the house, detectives discovered a comforter covering an object on the bathroom floor. When questioned, Vincent Vuichard identified the object as his wife. She was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered multiple slash and stab wounds.
During his six-day trial, Vincent Vuichard attempted to plead insanity. However, after less than a day of deliberation, the jury unanimously convicted him of first-degree murder. Under Michigan law, a first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald expressed her condolences following the conviction, stating, “Tanya Vuichard was a mother, grandmother, friend, and coworker — her senseless murder is a huge loss to the community.” She praised the trial team for securing a first-degree murder conviction in this challenging case.
Vincent Vuichard will remain in custody at the Oakland County Jail until his sentencing hearing, currently scheduled for February 6, 2025, before Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Jacob Cunningham.
