Broward homicide detectives said the shooter stayed at the scene and claimed self-defense.
NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 62-year-old Broward County man died after he was shot Tuesday during a dispute over a parking space outside a Walmart in North Lauderdale, sheriff’s officials said.
Bart Diguglielmo was shot shortly before 12:30 p.m. June 30 in the parking lot of the Walmart at 7900 West McNab Road. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews responded after a 911 call reported gunfire at the store. Diguglielmo was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators said Diguglielmo and a woman became involved in a verbal argument over a parking space before the shooting. The woman, whose name had not been released, remained at the scene and cooperated with detectives. Sheriff’s officials said she told investigators the shooting was self-defense. Authorities had not announced an arrest or filed charges as of Thursday.
The shooting brought a large law enforcement response to the busy shopping area. Crime scene tape blocked part of the lot as deputies spoke with witnesses and collected evidence. Witness David Anderson told CBS News Miami he heard a woman screaming after the gunfire. “She was screaming and she was saying a lot of things,” Anderson said.
Diguglielmo’s family described him as a retired nurse who worked in the field for about 30 years. His sister said he was a decorated military veteran who served during Desert Storm. She called him a Christian man and said the killing was devastating for relatives, including family members who had already mourned the death of his identical twin years earlier.
The case is being handled by Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives. Investigators are expected to review witness statements, physical evidence and any available video from the parking lot before sending the case to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors will decide whether criminal charges should be filed.
Officials had not released further details about what happened in the moments before the shooting, including whether either person was inside a vehicle, whether there was any prior connection between them, or what evidence supports or disputes the self-defense claim. The woman’s age and hometown also had not been made public.
The Walmart remained the center of the investigation as detectives worked to determine how a parking lot argument turned deadly. The next major step is a charging review by prosecutors after homicide detectives complete their report.
