Man Fatally Shot Wife of 31 Years During Divorce Proceedings

A Mississippi resident, Tony Morris, 67, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of the first-degree murder of his wife, Kathleen Morris, 64. The verdict was delivered by a jury on Wednesday. The incident, which took place in Terry, Mississippi, was reported to the Hinds County Sheriff’s deputies by Morris himself, who called 911 on the morning of August 26, 2024, to report that he had shot his wife.

Upon arrival at the couple’s residence around 7:15 a.m., deputies discovered Kathleen Morris deceased, with a gunshot wound to her upper body. The call to 911 had been made by her husband, Tony Morris, who was reportedly estranged from his wife at the time of the incident.

The couple was in the midst of divorce proceedings, according to Tony Morris’s brother, who spoke to local ABC affiliate WAPT at the scene. Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones confirmed that Tony Morris had indeed reported the shooting to dispatch, stating that he had shot his wife.

Following the incident, Tony Morris was taken into custody and identified as the sole suspect in the case. The motive behind the shooting was not explicitly stated, but Hinds County District Attorney Jodi E. Owens II commented on the tragic nature of the incident.

“A single moment of anger ended a 31-year marriage and took a life. Kathleen Morris lost her life during a moment of escalation that should have never happened,” Owens said. He further emphasized the importance of violence prevention, stating, “This case is an example of how quickly violence can overtake reason, and why prevention matters just as much as prosecution.”

Owens also stressed the need for community support systems that can intervene before situations escalate to violence. Tony Morris was convicted of deliberate design murder and will serve his life sentence in the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
