Man Killed Girlfriend in Walmart Parking Lot, Lived With Her Body for Weeks

A Montana man, aged 44, has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend. Christopher Brandon Foiles was handed the maximum sentence of 60 years in a state correctional facility by Gallatin County District Judge Rienne McElyea on Tuesday. The sentence comes after Foiles pleaded guilty to a single count of first-degree deliberate homicide in October, following a plea deal with prosecutors.

The victim, 34-year-old Megan Ashley Stedman, was fatally stabbed in the neck and chest by Foiles nearly two years ago. The sentencing hearing on Tuesday was marked by a poignant victim impact statement read by Stedman’s 16-year-old daughter. The teenager expressed her relief at the conclusion of the trial and the pain of losing her mother.

Foiles was given the chance to address the court during the hearing, where he expressed remorse for his actions. He acknowledged that Stedman did not deserve the fate he had inflicted upon her and admitted to thinking about her every day.

The case dates back to January 2024 when Montana authorities were searching for Stedman. They linked her to a 1973 RV, which was later found in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Foiles was apprehended when he exited the RV after local police knocked on the door. He immediately confessed to the murder, stating that Stedman’s body was inside the vehicle.

In a subsequent interview with detectives, Foiles admitted to killing Stedman several weeks prior to his arrest. The murder occurred in a Walmart parking lot in Bozeman, Montana, following an argument between the couple. Foiles, fearing that Stedman would call the police due to a no-contact court order, stabbed her with a kitchen knife.

Surveillance footage from the Walmart showed Foiles and Stedman entering the store together on December 14, 2023, marking the last time Stedman was seen alive. The following day, Foiles was seen making a series of suspicious purchases alone.

Foiles was initially faced with additional charges, including aggravated animal cruelty for killing Stedman’s dog. However, these charges were dropped in exchange for his guilty plea to the murder charge.
